Wordless Wednesday 27 - The faces of rescue

Today's pictures all courtesy of Patricia Nadan, a volunteer with Paws to the Rescue animal rescue transport team. South Carolina to Maine, this journey occurs every week rescuing dogs (and cats) from high kill shelters to safe havens.

These are the faces of animal rescue:

You folks make my heart sing. :)

  7. We see a lot of the "awful".  Heck, sometimes I'm afraid to open my email there's so much awful out there.  So when I got these photos in an email from a transport volunteer, I KNEW I had to share them here - we need to see more of the "wonderful".  I know we need to realize the awful is out there but sometimes we have to be reminded there's good in the world too.  :]

  8. These photos warmed my heart.  I don't know any of these people - most of them live 3, 4, 5 states away.  But their smiles, their dedication, their joy at saving these dogs puts a smile on my face I can't quite describe. :]

  12. Thanks for sharing the wonderful photos. It's amazing to think that there is such a simple (but not easy) solution to dogs dying in high-kill shelters--take them to other areas where they can be adopted.

I hope each of these animals find wonderful, forever homes.

  13. Thanks Pamela, I knew as soon as I received them that I wanted to share all these smiling faces on the blog. :)

It is interesting to know that such a simple 'solution' exists to help alleviate an on-going problem. Sadly, however, it is not "the" answer.  And the real answer is far more complicated.

As I've seen in my dealings with animal rescue in Puerto Rico, cultural attitudes are what we really need to address in our search for a long-term solution and that is a far more difficult task.

I was starting to write a book here but have instead decided there will be a post coming soon on some more of my thoughts.  Thank you for the inspiration. :)

  14. Awwww!  I stumbled onto your blog last night & saw a few people I knew grinning back at me!

Leslie, here is a story that helps me put things in perspective when things just seem so overwhelming and you wonder if you can make a difference...

One day a man was walking
along the beach, when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently
throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are
    you doing?”

The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the
ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them
    back, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize
there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t
    make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent
down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf.
Then, smiling at the man, he said…”I made a difference for that one.”

  15. This is such a beautiful tale. I'd like to believe many of us are beginning to understand while we might not be able to save every dog, we can save some. What's the expression? "Homeless pets: until there are none, rescue one."?

Thanks for joining in the conversation and especially for sharing your pictures.

  16. Aw, what wonderful souls - all of them! That black baby in the monkey T made me a pile of mush. And I never knew kitties got transported, too. Such a pretty Siamese.

    Thanks for sharing these. :)

  17. Oh kitties get transported, too - I had one a few weeks ago. I'm not sure why we don't get more of them - maybe they have their own railroad?

But yeah, the pups in pjs slay me.
