Saturday's dog: Laini, the Basenji

Would you look at this pretty dog?

Laini is a 6-year old, female Basenji available for adoption in Arizona through Basenji Rescue and Transport. She's good with cats and kids. She's good with big dogs but has reportedly been snarky with small dogs. (She, like most Basenjis, apparently doesn't realize she is one.)

If you (or someone you know) have always wanted a Basenji but were afraid of the demands the breed may put upon you, Laini just might be your girl. She's described as well-mannered and of mild temperament. A true cuddle bug, she likes to lie with her head on your lap and sleep "under the covers with her human". (Can you even stand it?)

Adopting through BRAT, "adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered..., fully vaccinated and tested for heartworm and strip-tested for Fanconi (negative unless otherwise noted), and temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number." Pretty impressive support system there, yes?

If you're interested in adopting Laini, hop over to the B.R.A.T. website for more information about her.

  1. Hey Laini Jet here.  Good luck, we hope you find your forever home.  Our basenji friend, Arnold, lived until 14 across the street.  His humans never took him out for a walk around the neighborhood, but loved him and played with him in the yard.  We often heard his yodels!

"...free lifetime post-adoption counseling" How cool is that?

  4. OMG, she is gorgeous! Duke would love a brindle sister, but Maggie would have none of it. Originally someone at Buddy Dog thought that Maggie might be part basenji since she wrinkles her forehead with her ears up at times. Laini is beautiful & sounds like she would fit in well in most families. Hope her family finds her soon!

  5. Yay Laini! I agree, this one's a real looker... and her profile sounds wonderful.

We were lucky to score a "mild" adult Basenji as our first rescue. I couldn't have asked for a better breed introduction.

  10. Yeah, I try to feature dogs here that I actually get to meet but we don't get a lot of B's coming through these parts so I decided to break my own rule. (Well, that and the fact that I haven't gotten out to photograph any dogs in a while.... ;)

  11. I have yet to hear a B yodel - I'm so jealous that you grew up next to one.  (Since I do transport for the rescue group, most of the Basenjis I meet are in a pretty stressed state and not really up for yodeling. ;)

  15. Bella is also from Buddy Dog (and might also have some Basenji in her.)  I love the brindle look, don't you?  And I wish we had gotten Bella a little sibling when we first got her - it might have helped.  It's much too late now as she is 'queen of the castle' and would, as you say, have none of it. ;)

  16. Hi!  Thanks for visiting - love your dogs!

Yeah, sometimes I wonder how folks who get their introduction via a, shall we say "full bodied" Basenji ever manage to come back for a second one.   I love how Basenji people like to brag about just how crazy their B is. ;)

  17. She will - we're just helping get the word out for her. :)

  20. She is a pretty girl, isn't she?  She'll get home soon, she's too sweet to not be noticed.
