A Rose by Any Other Name

So while I was off globe-trotting (okay, East Coast-trotting) back in May, Sarge had a Nickname Game contest and we missed it. :(

The game was to list all the nicknames you've ever called your pet and then let your visitors comment and choose which ones they like best.

Something you may not know is that Bella has quite possibly the most nicknames of any dog ever and we really would have enjoyed participating in that event. So even though the contest ended a month ago and everybody's two favorite Basset Hounds (Fred and Gloria) won, we're game to play for a day anyway. ("A lot of alliteration from anxious" authors... Sorry, went away for a minute... I'm back now.)

Jan has a whopping two nicknames for Bella: "Littlest One" and "Kid". I believe "Littlest One" started because he used to call Beau "Little One" and Bella, being smaller, became "Littlest". Okay, makes sense.

Some of the nicknames I have for Bella I can't for the life of me explain. I just very seldom call her by her real name (unless I'm trying to get her to do something or, at the very least, acknowledge my existence.)

So here's the list. Leave a comment below and let me know your favorite.

  • Bella Boo
  • Boo
  • Boo Boo
  • Bella Boop
  • Booby-doop
  • Booby-dooby-do (Sung to the tune of "Strangers in the Night". Yeah, I'm a little odd.)
  • Duck (Wha?)
  • Duckling (Really?)
  • Sweetie
  • Sweetie Pea
  • Sweet Pea
  • Punkin [sic deliberate]
  • Punkin pie
  • Bug
  • Princess
  • Snoodles
  • Pupschkin (Sounds like Alexander Pushkin but with a "psch" instead of just "sh".)
  • Pudding
  • Pudding pop
  • Munchkin
  • Belladonna
  • Bella Lugosi
  • The crazy dog
  • Scared-y pants
  • Bella the wunder-pup
  • Pupster
  • Kid
  • Kiddo

Any of these on your list? Which ones? Or, really, am I just losing it in my old age? Should I seek help? Let me know!

  1. I vote for Bella Lugosi, though Boo boo is a close second. I call our 2 the baby dogs, "Boo boo dogs", or Boo ba doos, maybe it's a Sato thing?

  2. I love Duckling! And Belladonna. Bella and Nola share: Bug, Sweet pea, Punkin, Princess and Munchkin. And of course, when she's feeling regal (or is in trouble) she gets her full/registered name: La Bella Nola! (The Beautiful Nola)

  5. You do not want to know how many of those nicknames are used around our house. Or maybe it would make you feel more normal. :)

The Frank Sinatra fan in me is pulling for Booby-dooby-do but I think Bella the Wunder-Pup just might win out.

  6. Ha ha, too funny :) We use many of the same nicknames, poor Cali  . . the only time she hears her real name is if she is not paying attention. I called her snickerdoodle this morning and she looked at me like . .."really? like I don't have enough nicknames already??" Most consistently I call her "boo" - which is why I so enjoyed this post: http://www.talking-dogs.com/2012/06/dog-song-saturday-me-and-you-and-dog.html :)

  8. Wow that's quite a few nicknames!  I think my favorite Duckling.  I'm not sure where that nickname came from, but I like it!

My brother's dog's name is George.  His #1 nickname is NoGeorge...a distant 2nd is Georgie.

    Happy Monday!

  9. I have a LOT of names for Sampson too, the worst one (according to Hubby who asked me NOT to call him that again) was Sputnik.

As for Bella, I have to go with Punkin, cause' that's one of my favorite nicknames for Sampson and he does answer to it. ;-)

  12. That is a lot of nicknames! Gosh, and I thought we were bad for that.

I think Pupschkin is my favourite. But that may just be because I am a bit of a Slavophile at heart. Duckling is also very cute. Does it matter where it comes from?

I find I call my dog "missy" a lot, which is really weird. I sound like an old woman who runs an orphanage or something.

  14. Oh my goodness, that sure is a lot!!  I thought I had a lot!!

I also know they call me 'the puppy' when they don't want me to know they're talking about me - like I haven't worked that one out!! :)

    Have fun,

    Your pal Snoopy :)

  15. Pupster and Duckling are definitely my favorites.

I know exactly what you mean about having a million nicknames. I've called Desmond everything from his name & variations of his name to less-than-flattering things like "Jerky-pants" & "Dummy" to things that make sense and yet don't--like "Doggyface" & "Puppa".  :-)

  16. We have nickname overload at my house too. Some of the ones above, for sure, as well as Bellakins, Bellarina, Bellaface, Bellabutt, Bella J. Puppington, Beast, and so many more...

Munchkin is a personal favorite over here too - love that it's on your list as well.
