Wordless Wednesday 20 - The Best Gift of All

Click for larger view - you really should, it's beautiful. :)

Note: This is not my picture. The photo was taken by Michael Bilotta who used to go to the same dog park we did. I added the text by photoshopping the note that came from Bella's rescuer, Nilsa, into Michael's photo. I should add that I then printed it out, framed it and gave it to Jan for Bella's first Christmas with us.

  6. Hi Bella! You asked how my food keeps my teeth clean, and I just wanted to let you know. Mom leaves the oats uncooked, so they're rough like dog food against my teeth. Also all the fruits and veggies she uses are raw, so they're crunchy which helps. I also get beef bones (never poultry) twice a month, or sometimes raw hides. Mom also brushes me teeth several times a week, as Dachshunds are very prone to dental problems. I'm not sure if Bella would be ok with this (not sure if you're already doing it either) but Mom's been brushing my teeth since I was 8 weeks old. I really really recommend homemade food, I think it would help Bella's confidence. I was really shy on dog food and after 2 months of homemade I'm well not friendly, but not at all shy. Hope this helps

    So beautiful!!!

I just read Dachshund Nola's comment. I started giving Mika raw feeding in early November due to his skin problems, it seems he is getting better and his teeth look really good. His teeth used to have heavy tartar but they are getting sparkling clean slowly.

  10. Thank you Bassetmomma.  Jan tells me I have to stop making people cry.  I tell him sometimes tears are a good thing. ;)

  15. Thank you so much for all this good info Nola!  Bella has a toothbrush but she's not very good about letting me use it which is why I was asking. She's really fussy about kibble (we have to coax her to eat - and we don't get the cheap stuff, either) but I give it to her to help keep her teeth clean.  If I can feed her something healthy, that she likes AND will keep her teeth in good shape, well yahoo!  (ella also gets things like bully bones and greenies to help keep her teeth in good shape so all together we might be in business. :)

Thanks again - this was really helpful!

  16. Thanks Deccy. Bella used to 'check in' with Jan whenever she was getting a bit overwhelmed at the field. I think Michael captured the feeling behind that check in perfectly.

  18. Thanks for the info. Bella's got good teeth now but she's really fussy about her food (this from the dog that eats slugs and poo - wth?) so I was looking at what Dachshund Nola's mom has been feeding her.  I like the idea that a home made diet might help with Bella's emotional 'issues' but wasn't sure if there were ingredients in Nola's home made recipe that could help keep her teeth healthy.

Now with your input as well, it sounds like we have several options to help with that. :) Thanks a bunch!

  20. Hi Y'all!

Truly a wonderful gift...a warm wet nose and soft fur...or in my case...lots of hands to scratch my head or rub my back.

Y'all have a very merry Christmas!

  22. Merry Christmas, Hawk, to you and your family!
(I don't know if you can tell from this photo but Bella's favorit-ist thing ever is to have her back end scratched as her hu-dad is doing here. I think that's all she wants for Christmas. ;)

Happy Holidays, Roo, to you and your crew. Thanks for all your Pet Fiction Theater efforts - it's really wonderful.

  26. Thanks. It made Jan's eyes leak, so I knew I did okay. ;)

(FTR, I may be Bella's favorite, but Jan is her protector - right from the start.)
